Honoring Unsung Heroes of USS Indianapolis
This powerful book, "Heroes in the Shadows," now available in e-book and paperback, pays tribute to the 28 brave African American who served aboard the final sailing cruise of USS Indianapolis. Despite their crucial contributions, their stories have been overlooked for nearly eight decades.
These sailors, aged 17 to 38, represented a diverse cross-section of black citizens from across America. Most were seasoned crew members, serving between seven months to over three years, and played vital roles alongside high-ranking officers. Their efforts earned the Indianapolis ten Battle Stars.
Tragically, none of these 28 young men survived the sinking. The book was created through the extensive research efforts of the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) Legacy Organization, bringing together family members and survivors to tell this important story.
